Define stupidity. Newsom attacks DeSantis on a law that isn't a law.

Define stupidity. Newsom attacks DeSantis on a law that isn't a law. I'm sure you heard the Governor of California go after DeSantis because of the shooting this past weekend. Blaiming it on the  recently passed law. A law that's not in effect till July.

This from Governor Desantis's spokesman.

On May 31, 2021, Newsom tweeted: “Overnight another mass shooting in America – this time in Florida where lawmakers just passed permit-less carry & removed requirements for background checks & instruction & training & oversight. This is not normal. We can’t let this be normal.” He also tagged DeSantis in his tweet.

The fact-check

Newsom’s tweet was quickly challenged by Redfern, who tweeted back: “This is false. The bill you’re referring to has not taken effect yet.” Redfern also linked to an article from The Miami Herald that explained that the permit-less carry bill DeSantis signed on May 7, 2023, will not go into effect until July 1, 2023. Therefore, Newsom was wrong to blame the shooting on a law that was not yet in force.

Newsom’s tweet was also misleading in implying that the permit-less carry bill would eliminate background checks for gun buyers in Florida. The bill only applies to carrying firearms in public without a permit; it does not affect the existing federal and state laws that require background checks for purchasing firearms from licensed dealers or private sellers. According to the National Rifle Association (NRA), which supported the bill, “This legislation does not change who can legally possess or purchase a firearm or where a firearm can be carried.”
