A cop kills a black person in smalltown USA, it makes nationwide headline news. A black person kills another black person in Chicago or Sacramento, and it might make the local news. Why?

In 2023, there were 12,276 Black homicide victims in the U.S., with a homicide rate of 26.6 per 100,000, nearly four times the national rate and nearly seven times the white victimization rate.

Daily shootings in Chicago, St. Louis, or Baltimore are statistically important but narratively repetitive, so they get buried.

Fear of stigmatizing Black communities

Editors worry that highlighting Black‑on‑Black homicide:

• Reinforces racist stereotypes
• Undercuts preferred narratives about systemic racism
• Creates political ammunition for opponents

So, they err on the side of under‑reporting.
