- 2010s–2020s: Broadly viewed as political — its classifications and public positions became part of national political debates.
In other words: The SPLC did not start political, but its role and public perception shifted over decades,
Now what happened the other day. The SPLC claimed this.
They paid these individuals as confidential informants to infiltrate extremist groups.
But what happened?
- The SPLC lied to donors about how their money was being used.
- The SPLC concealed the payments through improper accounting.
- Some recipients were leaders, not low‑level informants.
- Some of the money allegedly enabled additional criminal activity by those extremists.
- Therefore, the SPLC’s “informant program” amounted to fraud, not legitimate intelligence work.
